Last week Brandon had a fundraiser at school for leukemia. If they donated a dollar or more, they could wear a hat on Friday. They also had a competition among the classes to see who could raise the most money. Evidently at some point during the week, they talked about children with terminal illnesses and it really had an effect on Brandon. We were coming home from eating dinner out and he was talking about how he felt sad for them and wanted to help them beyond just donating to wear a hat on Friday. It made me so happy to see him actually thinking of others and wanting to give back. I wanted to help him so we started talking about ways he could do just that. We also started talking about our little friend Jackson York. Jackson is the sweetest little boy you could meet and has been through more than anyone should have to go through in one lifetime. He has diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) which he’s been fighting since December 2010. DIPG is a central nervous system tumor that forms from glial (supportive) tissue of the brain and spinal cord and forms on the brain stem. Jackson is 6 now and continues to fight and be an inspiration to everyone he meets. Brandon mentioned doing something for him for Valentine’s Day, so he and Austin picked out a Valentine’s Day card for him and sent him a McDonald’s gift card so he can get him some ice cream.
