Random Act of Kindness #7

February 16, 2012

Jackson's Journey Last week Brandon had a fundraiser at school for leukemia. If they donated a dollar or more, they could wear a hat on Friday. They also had a competition among the classes to see who could raise the most money. Evidently at some point during the week, they talked about children with terminal illnesses and it really had an effect on Brandon. We were coming home from eating dinner out and he was talking about how he felt sad for them and wanted to help them beyond just donating to wear a hat on Friday. It made me so happy to see him actually thinking of others and wanting to give back. I wanted to help him so we started talking about ways he could do just that. We also started talking about our little friend Jackson York. Jackson is the sweetest little boy you could meet and has been through more than anyone should have to go through in one lifetime. He has diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) which he’s been fighting since December 2010. DIPG is a central nervous system tumor that forms from glial (supportive) tissue of the brain and spinal cord and forms on the brain stem. Jackson is 6 now and continues to fight and be an inspiration to everyone he meets. Brandon mentioned doing something for him for Valentine’s Day, so he and Austin picked out a Valentine’s Day card for him and sent him a McDonald’s gift card so he can get him some ice cream. Random Act of Kindness #6

February 11, 2012

Imagine the smile on a kid’s face when they see two quarters in an NBA bouncy ball vending machine in the entrance of Stacks’ restaurant!  Woohoo!! Every Friday for as long as I can remember, my family, my parents, and granny go out to dinner. Tonight it was Stacks. Whenever we go to a restaurant that has toy vending machines or a claw machine, you can bet Brandon is going to beg me for some quarters. Sometimes he comes prepared and even brings his own. Usually the quarters are rewarded after he eats all/most of his food. Tonight was no different. The claw machine was calling his name. He put in his 50cents and, while I was adding the other quarters to the bouncy ball machine, I hear his excitement when he got not one, but two stuffed animals with one grab. I hope the lucky kid who gets a free bouncy ball is as happy as Brandon was getting two prizes for one!

Random Act of Kindness #5

February 5, 2012

For my fifth random act of kindness, I left a little surprise for our mail carrier. What would we do without our mail carriers?  With all the things I order online, from clothes to supplies, I probably get packages delivered about once a week on the average (more supplies than clothes unfortunately). I really should give Julie and Jeff (postal workers at the downtown Muncie post office) a token of appreciation too, because they process all the packages I send out. I visit them at least twice a week with bagfuls of boxes. So, in appreciation for delivering my mail, our mail carrier, Jason, got a nice note and some Reece’s Valentine Hearts. Thank you Jason for everything you do!
